Becoming the Confident Raconteur

Do you believe you have a story?

As a leadership coach, I’ve built my life around helping individuals see their story. While the individuals with whom I work know they have a story, it simply may not be presently clear to them in the distracting whirl of this 21st Century. That is, until I met Kim.

Kim is a leader in one of the large client organizations where I practice my coaching. We had come to the point in my program and process where we were to talk about her story of success. I was stopped in my coaching tracks at what she said next; “I don’t have a story.”

In the remainder of that session, we moved on as best we could, but I was baffled for some time and looked forward to our next conversation. In that subsequent session, Kim and I shifted from the planned conversation and relaxed into the present. She apologized for her state of mind in the previous session and told me why she had said she had no story.

Her manager had actually told her she did not have a story. His summation of such nonsense was his view that, because of her ethnic background, she had not pulled herself up out of a ghetto like so many others. Therefore she did not have a story.

Swept into the inability of this manger to lovingly lead, Kim did not believe she had any story of inspiration to tell from her own life. Encouraging her otherwise was my task.

 I proclaimed for Kim, “You have a story. It is your story and it is good.”

Kim will successfully release the grip of self-judgment and embrace the reality of her own story. She will then become a confident teller in her own right; of her story and that of others.

Leaving a legacy of impact, painted by the stories of your purpose and voice, others will joyfully tell your story. However, you are the qualified teller of the experiential acts that come together and form the story of your journey.Wading the Stream of Awareness (Love Chapter)

What are the building blocks of your story?

  • Your Values: List a handful of core values and make some effort to define them.
  • Your Strengths: What do you find yourself doing when you are performing your best?
  • Your Impact: What do you desire most for those whom your work and life impact?

Being with who you are at the core is encouragement to see all things as purposeful as you move along with purpose. This is confidence cast in the flowing love of your own story.

You have a story—you are a story.
